SHEIN Recalls Children’s Plush Toy in Ireland Over Chemical Safety Risk

SHEIN has recalled a children’s plush toy sold through its online marketplace in Ireland after authorities identified a potential chemical safety risk. The recall highlights the legal responsibilities surrounding children’s products sold through online platforms, particularly where goods are supplied by third-party sellers.

According to Ireland’s Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC), the recalled product is a Koala breathing plush toy. Testing found an elevated level of lead in the product exceeding established safety limits. The regulator warned that exposure could present a health risk through skin contact or ingestion. Approximately 64 affected products are believed to have been sold in the Republic of Ireland.

The recall raises important questions under product-safety and consumer-protection rules. Toys intended for children are subject to safety requirements designed to prevent exposure to hazardous substances and other risks. Where a product fails to meet those requirements, corrective measures such as withdrawal or recall may be necessary to protect consumers.

The case is also significant because the toy was sold through the SHEIN marketplace rather than necessarily being manufactured by SHEIN itself. Online marketplaces increasingly connect consumers with third-party sellers, creating complex questions about how responsibility for unsafe products should be allocated between manufacturers, sellers and platforms.

The CCPC has instructed consumers who purchased the affected toy to stop using it immediately and keep it away from children. Customers can also contact SHEIN regarding refunds or other concerns.

The recall follows other recent SHEIN toy safety notices in Ireland, including a gorilla plush toy recalled over choking risks caused by detachable parts and accessible stuffing.
